💵Charging for Additional Services or Products

Accepting insurance comes with specific regulations and restrictions regarding what providers can charge patients for outside of their standard 1:1 covered sessions.

👉 This section covers:

Understanding Balance Billing

Balance billing occurs when a healthcare provider bills a patient for the difference between the provider’s fee and the amount reimbursed by insurance. This practice is strictly prohibited and can lead to serious compliance violations.

Berry Street–Sourced Patients Billing

Because of the complex nature of insurance billing — and the legal risks associated with balance billing or even the appearance of balance billing — providers should not actively upsell or charge Berry Street–sourced patients for any additional services or products outside of covered sessions.

Supplements: You can recommend supplements to Berry Street patients using your Berry Street Healthie Fullscript account.

  • All supplement recommendations must be documented in your clinical notes.

  • Do not sell supplements or products to patients directly outside the approved Fullscript platform.

Provider-Sourced (PS) Patients Billing

For provider-sourced patients, you are permitted to offer or charge for additional services or products, as long as they are clearly distinct from insurance-covered MNT sessions.

  • You may use your own platform or the Berry Street billing system for convenience and consistency.

  • You must clearly outline in your invoice or receipt what the additional service or product includes, confirming that it is separate from covered MNT care.

  • This documentation protects you and ensures there is no perception of balance billing.

Important Reminder

You cannot charge any additional fees for sessions or services that are covered by the patient’s insurance plan. Doing so constitutes balance billing, which is illegal.

If you are uncertain about whether a particular charge or service is permitted, please contact Provider Support at 📧 [email protected] for guidance.
